Charlton arrived in France on the 14th October 1916, serving in the various units of the Northumbrian Field Ambulance. Wounded in action on the 11th April 1918 (gunshot graze to the left heal) but returned to duty that day. On the 27th May 1918 he was reported ‘missing, believed prisoner of war’—but in June he was recorded as ‘died’ on that date.
